A new eco-living book is hot off the presses: No Impact Man documents Colin Beavan’s attempt to live for an entire year without negatively impacting the environment. This book has gotten a lot of publicity, including a critical review by Elizabeth Kolbert in the New Yorker. Kolbert dismisses Beavan’s project and his book as a stunt with very little relevance or value to the “big” environmental issues. Right or wrong (I think she’s wrong), Kolbert’s assessment raises interesting questions about individuals’ roles in affecting social change: Do individual choices matter? Is there a point to trying to
reduce your personal impact on the environment? You can read my perspective on this issue in my blog post, The Impact of No Impact. Last month Sigg revealed that prior to August 2008 its aluminum water bottles contained BPA–the same bottles that it defended for “not leaching” BPA when word first started to get out about BPA in Polycarbonate Plastic water bottles. You can read about this latest chapter in the BPA Saga in my blog post, I Thought Sigg Already Was BPA-Free.

did you know that canned food liners also contain BPA? Last year, Globe and Mail tests of canned food revealed disconcerting results: BPA concentrations of 18.2 parts per billion in tomato sauce, 6.2 ppb in kid’s ravoli, and 14.1 ppb in tomato juice. These numbers may not seem high, but… (read more) As the West Nile virus season kicks into high gear (according to the CDC,
most cases occur during late summer and early fall), it becomes more important to protect ourselves against mosquito bites. But you may not want to spray yourself with DEET every day either… (read more) More than 100 million trees’ worth of junk mail arrives in American
mail boxes each year, nearly 50% of which goes straight into the trash, unopened and unread. You can save some trees and (a good deal of annoyance) by contacting the credit bureaus’ centralized opt out service to put an end to all those credit card and insurance offers… (read more) |
